Doll Pajama Top and Bottoms

We are going to use the scrub pants pattern as the base for our pajama bottoms. You can create a pair of solid color pajama bottoms following the scrub pants tutorial found HERE or follow along below to add an accent border on the legs.

Pajama Bottoms with Accent Border (follow tutorial below)

Supplies
1/3 yard of fabric
1/8 yard of accent fabric
11 inches of 1/4 wide elastic
Ribbon and 2 buttons (optional)
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Fabric Marker
Sewing Supplies


Step 1 – Draw the Pajama Pants with Accent Border Pattern

Important: If you already have a pattern for the scrub pants you can trace it and remove 1 1/8 inches from the bottom of the pattern. Then skip to step 2.

Important: If you don’t already have the scrub pants pattern begin here to make the pattern for the pajama pants with accent border.

On an 8 1/2  x 9 7/8 tall piece of paper measure and draw a vertical line 4 1/2 inches from the long side edge. Draw a second line 6 inches from the long side edge.

Now measure and draw a horizontal line 4 1/2 inches from the top of the paper.

Using this grid draw a curved edge at the top like the photo. Connect to the bottom with a straight edge.

Cut out the pattern and label it “Pajama Pants with Accent Border – cut 2 on fold”.

Step 2 – Draw the Accent Border PatternOn a piece of paper draw a 4 1/2 wide x 3 1/2 tall rectangle.

Cut out the pattern and label it “Pajama Pants Accent Border – Cut 2 on fold”.

Step 3 – Cut Pajama Pants Fabrics
Fold the fabric in half. Pin the pajama pants pattern to the fold. Cut out. Do this twice.

Step 4 – Cut the Accent Border Fabric
Fold the accent border fabric in half. Pin the accent border pattern on the fold. Cut out. Do this twice.

Step 5 – Attach the Accent BorderPress the accent border fabric in half lengthwise. Do this for both pieces.

Place one accent border to the bottom of one pant leg with “pretty” sides touching.

Make all the raw edges even and pin.

Sew along the edge using a 3/8 seam allowance.

Press the accent border down and the seam allowance up towards the top of the pants. (see photo in step 6)

Do this for both pant legs.

Step 6 – Sew the Center Seam
Place both pieces “pretty” sides touching. Make the curved edges even and pin.

Sew both curved edges using a 3/8 inch seam.

Step 7 – Sew the Inner Leg
Refold the pants bringing the center seams(the curved edges you just stitched) together. You will see it form the legs.


Make the leg edges even and pin. Make sure your accent fabrics match up neatly while pinning.

Sew using a 3/8 inch seam.

Step 8 – Sew the Casing
Fold the top of the pants down 5/8 inch towards the “wrong” side of the fabric and pin.

Mark an opening for the elastic to go into.


You can use the free arm on your machine to keep the pants flat and slide them under the needle.


Sew along the edge to make the casing. Do not sew the opening shut. Remember your elastic has to fit through the casing so keep your stitches neat and use your presser foot as a guide.

Step 9 – Insert the Elastic
Use a safety pin on the end of the elastic to help pull it through the casing.


Sew the ends of the elastic together.

Pin and sew the opening shut.

Step 10 – Add Boutique Trim (optional)
You can add a ribbon and/or buttons to the sides of the legs for a boutique look

Pajama Top

Supplies
1/4 yard of fabric
10 inches of 1/4 inch wide elastic
Two 18 inch pieces of ribbon
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pajama Top Pattern
On paper draw a 8 x 11 inch rectangle.

Cut out the pattern and label it “Pajama Top – cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric
Fold the fabric so it’s two layers thick. Pin the pattern onto the fabric and cut it out.

Step 3 – Mark the Side SeamPlace the fabrics together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.

Use a fabric marker to make a mark 3 inches up from the bottom edge on each side.

Step 4 – Sew the Side Seams
Sew from the bottom to the dot using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Repeat this for both side seams.

Step 5 – Finish the Arm Openings
Press the seam allowance including the seam allowance above the dots open.

A pressing ham or cushion will make this job easier. You can find a tutorial to easily make one HERE.

Carefully sew around the pressed open seams pivoting just below the dot. This will become the arm hole.

Step 6 – Sew the Casing
Fold the top edge of the shirt down 3/4 inches and pin.

Sew along the edge using your presser foot as a guide. Remember your elastic has to fit through the casing so keep your stitches neat.

Repeat this for both the front and back of the shirt.

Step 7 – Sew the Hem
Fold the bottom edge of the shirt up 3/4 inches and pin.

Sew along this edge using your presser foot as a guide.

Press the hem and casing neatly.

Step 8 – Add Elastic
Use a safety pin to help insert the elastic into the casing. You have a long way to pull and gather so you may want to pin the opposite end of the elastic to the edge of the shirt to keep it in place.

Pull the elastic through the front casing. At the end turn and pull it through the back casing.

Sew the ends of the elastic together. Even out the gathers hiding the ends of the elastic inside the casing.

Step 9 – Adding Ribbons
Tie ribbon bows around the elastic at the shoulders. I like to knot the ribbon then tie my bows so it won’t fall off later.

Trim the ribbon ends to pretty points by folding it in half and making a snip at an angle towards the fold.

Optional: Add a drop of fray check to the ends of the ribbons to keep them from unraveling.
