I’m getting one of my summer sewing camps ready for next week and thought I’d share a doll purse with you. It’s been ages since I’ve added to the doll accessories. Enjoy!
18” Doll Purse
Supply List
1/4 yard of fabric
1 piece 1/4” wide ribbon x 12” long for bow
two pieces 1/4” wide ribbon x 8” long for handles
two pieces 1/4” wide elastic x 4” long
Sewing supplies
Step 1 – Make the Pattern and Cut the Fabric
Draw a 7” x 9 1/2” rectangle on paper.
Label it “doll purse – cut 2”
Fold your fabric in half and pin the pattern on.
Cut out the pattern. You will have two pieces.
Step 2 – Attach the Handles
Set one fabric piece on the table with “pretty” side facing up.
Mark a dot 2 inches in from the edges on both short sides of the rectangle.
Center the handles at the dots with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin. MAKE SURE the handles are facing down like the photo.
Stitch close to the edges of the handles to hold them in place.
Step 3 – Sew the Bag Fabrics Together
Place the bag fabrics together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.
Sew both short sides using a 3/8 inch seam. This will make a tube.
Turn the tube pretty side out. Handles will now be facing correctly on the outside of the bag.
Press neatly.
Step 4 – Make the Casings
Draw a line 1 inch from the top and bottom edge.
Draw another line 1 1/2 inches from the top and bottom edge.
Sew along these lines to make 1/2 inch wide casings.
Step 5 – Insert Elastic
Place a safety pin on the end of the elastic. Use it to help you pull the elastic through the casing.
When the elastic gets to the edge of the casing stitch it in place to hold it. Continue pulling through and stitch the other end of the elastic in place.
Repeat for the other casing.
Step 6 – Add the Bow
Make a bow using the 12 inch piece of ribbon.
Pin and stitch the bow to the front center of the bag over the elastic casing.
Step 7 – Sew the Side Seams
Fold the bag in half with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.
Sew the sides using a 1/2 inch seam.
Trim a small triangle of fabric off the top corners of the seam. DO NOT cut your stitching. This will keep the edge from sticking out the top of the bag.
Turn bag pretty side out and poke bottom corners out neatly.
Enjoy your doll purse!!!!

How long of an elastic do we need for this purse?
I am going to be teaching my nine year old granddaughter how to sew this weekend. This will be a great item to start with and then on to a easy skirt. So glad I come upon this little purse.
