Zig-Zag Rainbow Tutorial

Here is the zig-zag rainbow I showed on the design wall the other day. The top is finished and waiting to be quilted for charity. I think some little child will enjoy it don’t you? There is a tutorial below for anyone interested.

Scrappy Zig-Zag Rainbow Tutorial
Finished size is approx. 40 1/2 wide x 44 1/2 tall

1/4 Inch seam allowance

Step 1 – Cut Rectangles
Cut 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 rectangles following the chart below

Red - 14
Orange - 14
Yellow - 14
Green - 15
Blue - 18
Purple - 15
White – 90

Step 2 – Sew the Blocks
Sew one color strip to one white strip creating all your 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 blocks.

Press seam towards the colored side.

Step 3 – Create the Rows
Sew your rows alternating one block set vertical and one block set horizontal creating the zig-zag pattern.

Press seams neatly towards the vertical strips.

Step 4 – Sew the Rows Together
Pin all the intersecting seams first. They should be facing in opposite directions making them butt together nicely.

Sew your rows together and press neatly.

Step 5 – Cut and Add the Borders
Cut your side border strips 2 1/2 x 40 1/2 piecing as needed
Cut your top/bottom border strips 2 1/2 x 40 1/2 piecing as needed

Attach the side border strips.

Attach the top and bottom border strips.

Press neatly.

Step 6 – Quilt, Bind and Label
Quilt and bind any way you like. Don’t forget to add a label to the back.
