This week we took another one of our action packed road trips. We drove and drove and drove. Passed the wind farms and oil fields of Texas.
After many hours of driving we finally arrived at our first stop, Santa Fe, New Mexico. What a wonderful city. So full of color and inspiration.
We headed to the historic center of town. Our first stop was the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi…. you know me…I love architectural details.
This was built in 1869-1886. Even though they ran out of money and didn’t finish the steeples it’s an awe inspiring cathedral.
The details were breath taking. They look like fabulous little quilt blocks:)
This was a beautiful bronze statue of the first Native American saint, Kateri Tekawitha, that was in the front of the cathedral.
Then it was off to the Loretto Chapel just to see the staircase…BUT… not just any staircase. Take a good look. It’s amazing! It was built in 1877 without nails, no center support, and was not connected to any of the walls. It’s two full spirals that are totally self supporting. The iron railing was added later. You have to go read the full background story.
And on the sewing front…I finished another tote bag before I left. This is from the Kitty City set by Amy Bradley.
And, quite a stack of hexies got basted during the car ride.

I have seen the movie starring William Petersen as the carpenter; it is based on the story of this staircase.
