Picnic Outfit

This outfit is designed to fit 18-inch dolls. These patterns are some of the favorites from the children’s sewing classes that I teach.

Capri Pants

Supply List

Fat quarter of Cotton Fabric

11 inch piece of 1/4 inch wide elastic

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw your pattern

Sewing supplies

Step 1 - Make the Pattern
Draw an 8 1/2 x 9 rectangle on paper.

Measure and draw a vertical line 4 1/2 inches from the long edge. Draw a second line 6 inches from the long side edge.

Now measure and draw a horizontal line 5 inches from the top.

Using this grid draw a curved edge for the top of your pants like the photo.

Then draw a straight line for the bottom of your pant leg.

Cut out and label the pattern “carpi pants – cut 2 on the fold”

 

Step 2 – Cut the fabrics

Fold the fabric in half and pin the pattern on the fold. Cut out. Repeat for the second pants leg.

Step 3 – Sew the Hem

Fold the bottom of the pants 1/2 inch towards the wrong side of the fabric.

Sew along this edge to make the hem.

Repeat for the other leg.

Step 4 – Sew the Center Seam

Place the pant piece together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the center seam (curved edge) even and pin.

Sew using a 3/8 seam.

Step 5 – Sew the Inner Leg

Refold the pants bringing the two center seams together.You will see the legs form.

Sew the inner leg seam using a 3/8 seam.

Step 6 – Sew Casing

Fold the top of the pants 1/2 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric and pin.

Mark an opening for the elastic to go into.

Sew along the edge to make the casing. Do not sew the opening shut.

Step 7 – Insert elastic

Use a safety pin to help insert the elastic into the casing.

Sew the ends of the elastic together.

Pin and sew the opening shut.

Halter Top

Supply List

Fat quarter of Cotton Fabric

Four 11 inch pieces of 1/4 inch wide ribbon.

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw your pattern

Fray Check (optional)

Sewing supplies

Step 1 - Make the Pattern

Draw an 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangle on paper. Fold in half to make a 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inch rectangle.

On the open edge measure and mark a dot 1 1/2 inches up from the bottom. Measure and mark another dot 3 1/2 inches up from the bottom.

On the top measure and mark a dot 2 inches in from the side.

Draw a straight line from the 1 1/2 inch dot to the opposite corner.

Draw a curved line from the top dot to the 3 1/2 inch dot.

Cut out the pattern and label it “halter top – cut 2 ”

Step 2 – Cut the fabrics
Fold the fabric in half and pin the pattern on. Cut out.





Step 3 – Attach the Ties
Mark a dot 1/2 in along the top edge and 1/2 down on each side edge.


Pin the ribbons next to each mark. The ribbons will face in to the fabric like the photo.


Sew across the ribbon to hold them in place.


Gather up the ribbons to one side like the photo.



Step 4 – Sew the Halter
Place both fabric together with “pretty” sides touching . Make even and pin.


Mark and opening on the bottom edge. Make sure the ribbon tails are between the dots.


Sew around using a 3/8 inch seam. Do not sew the opening shut.



Step 5 – Clip Corners and Curves
Carefully clip a small triangle off each corner.


Carefully clip the curves. Do not cut your stitching.





Step 6 – Finishing
Turn pretty side out.


Gently use a point turner to make nice square corners.


Press and top stitch using your presser foot as a guide.



Add a drop of Fray Check to the ribbon ends.
