Welcome to the Quilt Quazy Queens blog hop day #2.
This year’s theme is UFO’s….
Of course I don’t mean that kind of UFO. I’m talking about what’s hiding in your closet.
Those Unfinished Fabric Objects. Eeeeek!!!
- - - - - - - -
I group UFO’s into three catagories…Which one are you?
- - - - - - -
#1 The “Serial Topper”
You work full speed ahead, get the top done, then poof, nothing. THAT’S ME!
My Tips: The only thing that works for me is to create deadlines with people that I don’t want to let down. I like to join groups like Hands2Help and Quilts for Kids Charities. That gets the quilt finished and somebody to give it to all in one swoop.
Current “skeletons in my closet” Ummm, is that a top from 2013? Uggg.
#2 The “Kit Collector”
You love the challenge of hunting for those row by rows, enjoy collecting those block of the months, and are drawn to the pretty packaging of pre-cut kits. You buy them but then they sit in the closet without a plan.
My Tips: Step back and figure out why you purchased them in the first place. Is it something you still want to make? Is there a real plan for it in the future? If not, pass it on to a guild member, sewing bee friend, or sell/ swap them online to somebody that might enjoy finishing the project.
My Alaska kits that haven’t been put together ~ but will be
#3 The “Orphan Keeper”
You need to give all single blocks a loving home. You stow away quilt leftovers, swap blocks, test samples, technique samples, and grab lonely blocks off the guild freebie table.
My Tips: This is a GREAT category to be in! Plan some fun time every once in while. Play “outside the box” and use your imagination. An “orphan block” can become almost anything and, hey, you’re halfway done sewing before you even start!!!

Sooo many ideas to put those “orphan blocks” to good use.
What’s your oldest UFO?
My oldest UFO sat around for 24 years. It moved with us not once, not twice, but three times. In 2012 I finally slapped some bright borders on the applique panel and called it finished.

Thank you very much for your awesome post. I really enjoyed reading it all and particularly like the Kennel Quilt idea. Believe me, I'm telling my guild members about that one. Maybe we can start something similar in South Africa. Love it! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteRonelle
I love all your ideas for orphan blocks! And your "old" UFO turned out wonderfully. Thanks so much for all the great ideas and the generous giveaway opportunity.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas Carol especially for the orphan blocks. I like to put them together for kids quilts. Makes them fun and whimsical
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your post! I am definitely a block collector, have a couple boxes of orphans. I try to remember to pull them out sometimes and use them in quilt backings or make them into pot holders or zip pouches.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your UFOs. I only have a few so far but I'll be catching up. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great blog hop and give aways!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your awesome tips!
ReplyDeletePlease click on the delaineelliott above for my email link.
wow, I love your chickens. I think that at one time or another I am all three of these. thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI fall into the first category. Lots of tops and not as many finishes.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got your quilt finished. It was worth the wait
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing ideas for orphan blocks. I am a great serial topper.
ReplyDeleteWow, 24 years is a long time. Your chicken quilt is awesome. I like your tips in #3. It's a whole lot easier making things like mug rugs than a whole quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the extra giveaway. That's a great prize! I enjoyed your post and your categories. I definitely fit #1 and #3, and part of #2. I do collect rows and shop hop patterns, but they are free, and I don't buy the kits. I don't buy kits often. I think I have two UFO kits, plus one I inherited from a friend when she died. I'll do them all, if I live long enough. LOL
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a serial topper. I need to inventory what I now have. Last year I had 27 but I hope I've cut that down a couple. Of course for every one I complete, I start at least one more so I probably still have about that amount.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for these giveaways! I have checked out some new sites. Thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!! I do believe I've seen those Alaska row by rows before! hahahaha
ReplyDeleteI've got all of the above. Is there a special name for those of us that do...other than crazy!
:-)
Great post! I enjoyed reading how you categorize your UFOs. I finished my oldest UFO last spring it was 21 years old. Now my oldest is about 15. I'm not even sure I like it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'm always happy to know I'm not the only one with "skeletons" in my closet! Those things hang around and only make me stressed. My oldest UFO is about 5 years old. It used Heat n Bond and I used too many layers of it, so it's very stiff. I still love it, but wonder if it'll ever get finished. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI am in all of the above categories for UFOs. "Serial Topper" ... I have way too many of those ... and too many orphan and swap blocks ... and too many kits in bags, some of which I put together ... and I would love to add the Eleanor Burns one to the mix ... lol! Thanks for some great ideas to get some of them finished. Thanks for sharing ... :) Pat
ReplyDeleteTake 2 tops, same size and make a reversible quilt. Get rid of 2 ufos at once.
ReplyDeleteCool idea for orphan blocks. I like all your projects, thank you for sharing. Have a great day! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely a serial topper. This year I'm determined to finish up! I'm adding the necessary borders, cutting the binding--what a ridiculous reason for not taking something to the longarmer, right?--and even tying some, or doing the most basic machine quilting on my own. Better done than folded in a big pile. I'm a quilter, not a topper, I keep telling myself.
ReplyDeleteWoW, Carol, this is such a great post. I think I am more the 2 and 3, because if I have a finished top, I just want to get it quilted and done. I'm so happy you participated in this hop this year. What a joy to have so many wonderful ideas for our UFOs. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm a little of 1 & 2. I have several quilt tops to quilt. I'm trying to learn free motion quilting so hope to get going on them. I also have several rows and other kits that I have purchased. I really want to get going on some of the kits but am trying to get my UFOs finished first.
ReplyDeleteYour chicken wall hanging is adorable.
I've been battling UFOs for years - one of my problems is that I keep adopting other people's UFOs! Oh well, it's all fun, right?
ReplyDeleteI'm a 1. Have no idea how old my oldest UFO is.
ReplyDeleteMy oldest ufo is probably 15 years old. I still like it so want to finish it. Other projects keep getting added!
ReplyDeleteLoved your Post! So much info,,,I Bookmarked it! :) Love the Orphan Blocks ideas!! Thank you sooooo much for all the sharing! :) Know I belong in the First category :/ ask my Quilty Daughter..who passes me up with Finished quilts! Lol
ReplyDeleteI am definitely an Orphan Keeper. Thanks so much for all the great ideas about what to do with these orphans!
ReplyDeleteLove the chickens, I am glad you finished it after all.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I think I’m a little bit of all the above, hehe. I’m not quite sure how old my oldest UFO is. However, we will be moving in a few months so as I’m packing i’ll have to see. I know one is about 28 years, YIKES! I need to get busy ;-D Thanks for sharing!

I am a sereal topper, and an orphan keeper. In my defense... I do most of my quilting by hand, sew those tops add up.
ReplyDeleteI'm an orphan keeper, in fact more of an orphan repurposer, my post for the hop incorporates blocks from two different mystery quilters.
ReplyDeleteGood post! I'm a serial topper and a kit keeper! My oldest UFO is a lite seventeen years old! Churcae(at)auburn(dot)edu
ReplyDeleteI collect fabric, patterns, and UFOs. My oldest UFO was started in the 1970's -- it is actually partially hand quilted.
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas for clearing up this ever growing problem
ReplyDeleteLOL is that Chicken pattern still available somewhere? I love it! ahhh, so cute!!! I think my oldest UFO is five years. I tend to do tops and rarely get to the quilting.:)
ReplyDeleteI like your orphan block ideas. thanks for sharing :)
Loved reading your blog! I have that Early Bird quilt top somewhere, too, and it needs to be finished...one of these days. Thank you for all the wonderful tips and sites to visit.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a kit hoarder. I've got quite a few still to do, with more in the way, I know!
ReplyDeleteI like the groups you separated your UFOs into. I may use that to help sort mine. The only category I'm short of is finished tops. When I do finish something I get it quilted. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I probably tend to be in the first category. I enjoy making the top, and then I get distracted by something else!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how old my oldest UFO is, but I know it's been several years. I have two quilt tops that need quilting - well, actually 3. LOL One is small so maybe I can get it done myself.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU FOR YOUR BLOG+THIS NEAT GIVEAWAY!
