How fun is this piece! Back in the 60’s my aunt used to have a wall in her house that anyone visiting could paint anything they wanted on it. It looked kinda like this.

You can’t really see it in the photo but the hand stitching was so small it looked like it was done on a machine. Wow, beautiful!

First it was amazing to see a quilt made from 1/2 inch squares. Second, just look how perfect each corner matches up. I couldn’t do that if I tried. Wow!

Thread painting and lots of insanely detailed machine quilting were definitely the trend this year. I was happy to see lots and lots of applique too. There weren’t very many traditional pieced quilts.

More eye candy for you to drool over….

The photo doesn’t do this justice. The white area around the fish is sheer fabric appliqued over the top to look like the moving surface of the water. Amazing.

The emotion of this piece just draws you in. You can feel the anguish. The color, art and texture just speak to you.

Breath taking!! This is a thread painted piece.

Her face is so beautiful.

The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show part 1

So much eye candy! So much inspiration! The Mid-Atlantic quilt show did not disappoint. It was a fun day.

I was most excited to turn the corner and run into A Day in the Life of a Diner Booth by Linda Cantrell. This was the second time I’ve gotten to see one of her fabulous quilts in person. I LOVE her quilts. The detail is AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Just take a minute and look at all the tiny details that are appliqued in each block. Her humor is wonderful.

She often hides Elvis and aliens in her work. Can you spot them?

This block reminded me of the Thanksgiving my 2 year old niece stripped and ran passed everyone eating dinner yelling I’m neckid, neckid, neckid. Hahaha.

Did you take a moment to pause and enjoy nature’s show last night? To ponder our position in the grand scheme? To wonder who or what else was doing the same thing at the same moment?

Venus and Jupiter passed close and high in the sky early yesterday evening. To the naked eye they were big and bright. Here is what my camera caught. It’s not as pretty as what I saw though.

Goodnight Moon and More

This is the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival weekend in Hampton, VA. Guess where I’ll be? So many quilts to see and so many goodies to buy. Lots of photos coming soon.

One goodie added to my stash is the Goodnight Moon quilt kit. I don’t usually go for pre-printed panels but I LOVE this book. It was a gotta have item.

This book was picked for the bedtime story pile every night for years.

The binding finally fell off from over use so we taped it back together and kept on reading. It’s still in my bookcase.

My daughter gave me a more modern version for Christmas this year. It’s called Goodnight ipad. How fitting. Hahaha.

Peanuts Fabric and Quilt

I’m getting excited about the new Happiness is Peanuts fabric line from Quilting Treasures. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. So, today I dug out my existing Peanuts fabric stash that I’ve been collecting for a while now. It’s probably time to put it to good use. I always struggle over collecting or using. Hmmm. That’s an issue for another day.

Anyway, I really wanted to showcase the fabrics as large blocks so I played with EQ7 and came up with this layout. Each center block represents the background color of a Peanuts print that I will have. The border is reminiscent of Charlie Brown’s clothing.

I LOVE a snow day. Not dayzzz, week, or month. Just a nice snow day. It’s already melting away but it’s lovely.

I’m still plugging along on my boy/girl quilt pattern. I keep getting side tracked by other requests. Somebody is waiting on a yarn kitty so that is on the agenda too today.

All Flakes Welcome Here pattern is ready for sale in my Etsy shop. He’s fun and fast to make. Another great project for using up scrap stash.

We have our first real snow of the winter season. It’s coming down steady now. The dog and I have already been out running around in it. Yup, in the dark like a couple of nuts. She discovered that the entire back yard is now edible and won’t come back in. Hahahaha.

Snow Day….Maybe

Well, it looks like this might be our last hope for some snow this winter. They were calling for some accumulation this evening so I wanted to help. I was going to run out front and do a snow dance but thought that might freak out the neighbors a bit. Instead I made a wall hanging. Hahaha.

I’m working on putting the pattern together now.

Another Sneak Peek

Ya’ll are so smart! For those that simply couldn’t be fooled by my fabric choices, I have another sneak peek.

I’m designing one quilt pattern that makes 2 quick quilts. By simply changing out a few appliques (not all of them) and the fabric colors you will have a quilt for a girl or a boy.

As usual, I’m the queen of “changing my mind”. It’s making me run a little behind the schedule I wanted for finishing. I’ve tossed several fabrics I had in my original idea and picked up a few new ones. I’m finding less is more. Narrowing the color choices makes it less chaotic and more pleasing.

Sew What Mondays

I created a custom apron this weekend for a client that can only use one hand. The neck strap, which is a customized length, is stationary so the apron can be slipped easily over the head. It has a single D-ring on one side and an extra long tie on the other.

The tie pulls through the D-ring and folds back over itself with a Velcro closure.

She originally wanted the Velcro closure on the front which was a little easier to maneuver but I was afraid that any dangling fabric might hit the stove and catch fire.

Hurray for more independence!!

The Batting Experiments 3 of 3

One more day of playing with batting….

Experiment #3

The problem:
I wanted to know how stitching and batting type effected the final quilt after it’s washed.

The process:
I stitched 4 different batting samples with a small free motion meandering, large free motion meandering, and large walking foot block. The samples were washed and dried together.

The constants:
1. Each sample was the same size.
2. Each sample was made from the same fabric.
3. Each sample was stitched with the same thread.
4. All samples were washed together on a gentle cycle with cold water then dried on a low heat setting.

The variables:
1. Sample #1 contained Hobbs Poly Down batting (before washing)

2. Sample #2 contained Quilter’s Dream Request Poly batting (before washing)

3. Sample #3 contained Warm and White cotton batting (before washing)

4. Sample #4 contained Quilter’s Dream Request cotton batting (before washing)

All four side by side (before washing)

The results:

How they stitched
All four were great to machine stitch on. The Hobbs Poly Down, which was loftier than the others, was surprisingly nice to work with. I love the puff look in the areas with more space between the quilting. The Warm and White had a tiny bit more shifting to the layers while sewing. The other three battings seemed to cling more to the fabric.

How they compare after washing

1. I was surprised to find that all 4 samples shrunk exactly 3/4 inch in length and width. I thought the cottons would have shrunk more. I’m guessing that the batting shrinkage was limited by the fabric shrinkage or maybe due to the fact that they were fluffed in the dryer first causing some pre-shrinkage. I’m not sure.

2. The cotton battings were slightly stiffer than the poly prior to washing. After washing they were actually softer and had slightly more drape. Of course my samples were only fat quarter in size not full quilts so a true test of snuggle factor was difficult.

3. The Warm and White Cotton and the Quilter’s Dream Request Poly weighed slightly more.

4. The cottons took longer to dry. That was to be expected as well based on fiber content.

5. The puckering in the smaller meandering spaces felt the same on the Hobbs Poly Down and the two cotton battings. However, on the cotton battings the puckering had a nicer, more even look along the stitch line. The cotton battings had a more antique quilt look to them.

6. Visibly there wasn’t much difference between battings, to me, in the large meandering areas. The Hobbs Poly Down felt slightly loftier than the rest to the touch.

7. Hobbs Poly Down was noticeably loftier in the larger spaces. That was to be expected since it was the loftiest batting to start with.

My conclusion:
I truly thought I was a die hard poly batting fan. After all this research I’m not so sure.

I learned that cotton battings aren’t as scary as I thought they were to work with. They didn’t shrink as much as expected. Personally, I would not go through the effort of pre-washing a cotton batting before using it.

I also learned that each batting has it’s pros and cons. It really depends on the quilt, the finished look you are going for, and how it will ultimately be used. I admit it….there isn’t just one right batting for the job. Hmmm.

This has been a really fun adventure. I’ve learned a lot. I hope it’s useful to all of you as well. HAPPY QUILTING!!!

Pinmoor Review

Have you seen these yet? The are called Pinmoor pin anchors. What a fabulous find!

They are little silicone pieces that are 1/2 inch long and 3/8 round. They come in lots of other colors too.

You slide your pins in to them like mini pin cushions. You can slide the pin into the end or side it doesn’t matter.

The idea behind this gadget is to elevate the tediousness of opening and closing safety pins for pin basting. They also have lots of other handy uses too.

My Pros: I had my doubts at first but they really do grip the pins and stay on tight. Once I got the knack of using them they were fast and easy. I didn’t stab myself or chip a finger nail like I usually end up doing with safety pins. The quilt didn’t feel as awkwardly heavy after pin basting either.

When I’m doing free motion quilting I will admit I sometimes don’t pay close attention to my pins. These didn’t get hung on the machine like safety pins sometimes do. I didn’t have to be a contortionist to undo them if I stitched too close.

I like the idea that you can use them with any style pins that you already have. This makes them nice for different projects and you aren’t left with large safety pin holes in the fabric.

My Cons: Priced at $37 per 100 they are 3X more expensive than the curved basting safety pins. If you have small children you would have to be careful as they might cause a choking hazard. Like candy, the colors and size would be very attractive to them.

Experiment #2

The problem:
I was having trouble getting my batting to stay flat and smooth while basting my quilt layers together. I read online that you could run the batting through the dryer to remove the wrinkles. Really? Have you heard of this? It’s not on the packaging.

The process:
I gave it a try with 4 different batting samples.

The constants:
1. All batting samples were tossed in the dryer at the same time.
2.They ran on low heat for 5 minutes together.

The variable:
4 different brands of batting were used - Hobbs Poly Down, Quilter’s Dream Request Poly, Warm and White Cotton, Quilter’s Dream Request Cotton.

The results:

Hobbs Poly Down (before)– This was the craziest batting right out of the package. It had a mind of it’s own and was very stiff.

Hobbs Poly Down (after)– Very faint hint of the deepest creases can be seen afterward. Just look how soft and fluffy this turned out.

Quilter’s Dream Request Poly (before) – Not too bad right out of the package. Almost all the wrinkles and creases disappeared after I smoothed it by hand. I would probably use this one right out of the package without any further treatment.

Quilter’s Dream Request Poly (after) – This one did the best. It had no visible crease marks remaining afterwards.

Warm and White Cotton (before) – Lots of deep wrinkles and creases from the packaging that couldn’t be smoothed out by hand.

Warm and White Cotton (after) – You can barely see the deepest crease location at the bottom afterwards.

Quilter’s Dream Request Cotton (before) – Very few creases right out of the package. All the small wrinkles disappeared after smoothing it out with my hand.

Quilter’s Dream Request Cotton (after) – Very faint hint of the deepest crease was left. It was so minimal that it couldn’t be seen in the photo.

My conclusion:

Running the batting through the dryer on low heat for approx. 5 minutes removes virtually all wrinkles and creases. It makes a huge difference. Why would I want to start my quilting process with wrinkles and creases already there? I have a difficult time basting and quilting as it is. Funny, none of the packaging even mentions this step. Hmmm. I LOVE Google!

The Batting Experiments 1 of 3

We all know that I don’t have anything better to do….ya, right. Sometimes I get so distracted!

Experiment #1

The problem:
I haven’t been real happy with my batting lately. My quilts are coming out rather stiff and not snuggly. Some were applique and some were pieced. I know quilts with lots of applique are going to be a little stiffer. I’ve always used what I thought was high quality batting so I’m baffled.

The process:
I made two quilts containing the same batting but stitched them differently.

The constants:
1. Quilt #1 and #2 both contain Hobbs Poly Down batting cut from the same package.
2. Both quilts were quilted using the same cotton thread.
3. Both quilts are the same size and use similar fabrics.
4. Each quilt was folded the same way and held up from the bottom center.

The variables:
1. Quilt #1 was quilted with large 5 inch squares using a walking foot.

2. Quilt #2 was quilted with a large meandering design.

The results:
Quilt #1 turned out very soft and snuggly. You can see that it has a nice drape to it.

Quilt #2 is much stiffer and not very snuggly. You can even see that it stays almost flat with very little drape.

My personal conclusion:
I have to say that I was surprised by the results. I really thought the stiffness was caused by the batting choice. Starting with a quality, soft batting does play a role in how soft the final quilt will be. But, the amount of stitching is also a very large factor. The closer the quilting the stiffer the quilt. Hmmmm.

Sew What Monday

Welcome to another Sew What Monday! What have you been up to?

I know I’ve been missing lately but I haven’t been idle….

Let’s see, I’ve been practicing my free motion quilting. Determination is my middle name! I quilted two quilts on my machine this weekend. One was done using a walking foot and the other with free motion meandering. They’re both being donated to the Quilts 4 Kids organization. Sadly, I’m a little behind in getting them in the mail.

My sewing room has been moved down the hall. The layout and space is SEW much better. Having everything at arms reach above me is wonderful. When the weather gets warmer I want to paint the other desk white as well.

I have a nice walk in closet to stash even more stash in. But don’t tell hubby that. Hahaha.

Hopefully I will get a large chunk of time in there this week. I have several tutorials that are half finished and piling up . Keeping my fingers crossed…

January Free Motion Challenge

Well, I finally got a chance to work on the January free motion challenge.

Observations…..

1. Man! It’s a lot harder than it looks.

2. I’m directionally challenged. LOL. I can’t make the same design in all directions without turning the project.

3. I love making loops!

4. I can’t meander without getting lost and blocking myself in.

5. I NEED LOTS of practice. Thank goodness for this challenge. Click below to come join the fun and learn a new skill.

Come play outside the box with me.Want to brainstorm together? I know you do.

As you know, I teach sewing classes for kids ages 8-15. This summer I’m offering another camp week called Project Sew. The students are given a new sewing challenge each day. They have 6 hours to design, shop and make their projects.

Here’s where I need some brainstorming help. I only have 3 ideas so far and need 2 more. Sorry but I can’t share them prior to class. Top secret and all that. But I will share last year’s challenges to get you thinking.

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Challenge – Make something useful from a pair of jeans
2. Just Hanging Around Challenge – Create a quilted wall art which must include 1 applique, two 3-D items and a piece of ribbon, yarn or trim(not counted as the 3-D element)
3. One Little Word Challenge – Pick one little word then make a pair of pajama bottoms using 3 customizations that represent your word
4. Tie It All Together Challenge – Create a purse/tote and a matching accessory using 3 notions from the given list and a men’s tie
5. Inside Every Girl is a Goddess Challenge – Create a goddess outfit that represents something about you. They had a few secret objects that had to be included in the outfit.

I know there are a lot of really creative people out there. Please come play outside the box and have some fun with me! Any brainstorming ideas, even if they sound crazy and half baked, are welcome. You never know what might come together.

Made by Others

It’s sew fun to see what others have created using my patterns. I love reading about the personal touches that everyone adds. So, I thought I’d take a minute to share some of their fabulous projects.

This was Connie’s first attempt at applique. Would you have guessed? She did an amazing job!! This quilt was made using the Snack Attack pattern. Guess what? She won 3rd place at the county fair. Now that’s something to brag about! You can read her post HERE.

This project was made by Coral using The New Food Pyramid pattern. It was a gift for her sister-in-law. I just LOVE the border fabric. It really pulls it all together. The 3-D elements that she added really make it fun too! Doesn’t it just make you smile? The quilting is so beautiful. You can find more of Coral’s projects HERE.

Alyson from the Hasty Quilter blog created a half sized…you heard right…half sized wall hanging using the Fascinating Friday quilt along. Sooo many teeny tiny pieces! It was a surprise gift for her boss who was retiring. It turned out AMAZING. I love the fabrics. They give it a digital look up close but it looks great as you back away and it comes into focus. You can read her post and tips for shrinking a quilt to a wall hanging HERE.

Kirstin from the Hello Kirsti blog created a 2 great kitchen sets. One for her 18-inch doll and one for her cousin’s doll. She replaced some of the ribbon with decorative elastic to make it easier to dress the doll. She also added a hang loop on the oven mitt and interfacing to the hat. What great ideas! It’s the start of a new year and I’m already feeling behind. How is that possible? So many ideas and not enough hours in a day. Ugh. I was helping my daughter move so I didn’t get too much done in the sewing room this weekend. I did complete a PDF file for my new “All We Need” tote and pocket tutorials.

My Tote Was Featured

My tote was featured today as a Meet and Make on the FaveCrafts blog. Please drop by and take a peek at my All We Need tote tutorial. It finishes at 12 x 12 x 5 inches and is fully lined.

Below are two bonus tutorials for my lovely blog followers and visitors. They are for a fun inside and outside pocket that you can add to your tote to customize it. I love making quirky pockets on my totes and bags.

Inside Pocket Tutorial

Add to the lining before assembly

Supplies
12 x 12 inch piece of fabric
5 1/2 x 11 piece of Peltex
Chalk wheel (optional)

Step 1 – Make the Pocket

Fold the fabric in half with “pretty” sides touching to make it 12 wide x 6 tall.

Mark an opening on the bottom edge for turning.

Sew around the sides and bottom using a 1/2 inch seam. Don’t sew between your marks.

Carefully clip the corners.

Turn pretty side out. Use a point turner to make nice corners.

Step 2 – Add the Peltex

Stuff the Peltex inside the pocket opening. Make sure it butts up to the fold at the top of the pocket. Doing it this way eliminates the bulk in the seams and makes a nice stiff pocket.

Step 3 – Attach the pocket

Do this at the beginning of step 4 on the tote tutorial

Center and pin the pocket 4 inches down from the top of one of the lining pieces.

Stitch close to the side and bottom edges of the pocket. I like to make triangles at the corners for extra support.

Step 4 – Make Pocket Divisions

Use a chalk wheel to draw custom divisions for your pocket. If the pocket is too deep you can also sew across the bottom of a division to make it shorter in depth.

Sew along your lines.

Note: If you add an inside and an outside pocket to your tote be sure they are on opposite sides of the bag when you put the lining in.

Outside Pocket Tutorial

Add to the back of the bag before assembly

Supplies
6 x 12 inch piece of fabric
1 inch wide strip of bias cut fabric
7 inch or larger zipper
Piece of paper for pattern
Zipper charm (optional)
Bias tape maker (optional)

Step 1 – Make the Pattern

Draw a 6 x 6 square on the paper.

Fold it in half and cut a nice wide rounded corner on the bottom.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric

Fold your fabric in half. Pin the pattern with the top of the pocket on the fold of the fabric.

Cut out the fabric.

Step 3 – Add the Zipper

Place the folded edge of the fabric on the zipper and sew in place.

Step 4 – Attach the Pocket

Do this at the beginning of step 3 on the tote tutorial

Open the zipper slightly and trim off the extra. Be careful not to lose the zipper pull.

Center the pocket approx. 3 1/2 inches down on the back side of the tote.

Stitch all the way around the pocket using a scant 1/4 inch seam.

Step 5 – Make the Bias

If you have a bias tape maker you can easily use that.

With bias maker

If not, press 1/4 inch along both edges of the bias cut fabric. I personally like to fold the strip in half and press a center line. Then I fold and press my edges in.

Without bias maker

Step 6 – Attach the Bias

Pin the bias along the outer edge of the pocket. The outer edge of the bias will be slightly outside the pocket edge. That way the stitching will encase the edge of the pocket and keep it from fraying later.

Stitch close to both edges of the bias. I like to sew all the way around in one step so it also catches the top edges.

Step 7 – Add Charm (optional)

Add a charm or ribbon pull to the zipper tab.

Your Fun Outer Pocket is Finished! Enjoy!

I finished a quilt top for the Quilts for Kids organization this weekend. This was the kit they sent me. It’s a little too funky for my taste. hahaha.

I also finished part of a wiener dog from the Dare To Be Square Book. He’s looking a little odd at the moment but I love this pattern. He’s also being donated to the Quilts For Kids. The hopeful plans are to get them quilted and in the mail by Friday.

Quilt for Kids is a wonderful organization that gives finished comfort quilts to children with life-threatening illnesses. You can request a quilt kit to make and find out more information about them HERE.

As usual I’m busy, busy, busy. I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t know how to be idol. Hahaha. In the sewing room I’m finishing up 3 new patterns and 3 technique tutorials. I should have them ready to share within the next week or so. Also, I have a few other fun ideas that I’m still tossing around so stay tuned.

Baby Lock Jane Review

There’s a new baby in the house. A Baby Lock Jane that is. I’ve been sewing on it for about 3 weeks now and love, love, LOVE it. Does anyone else sew on this machine? I’ll give you a tour of the machine and you can decide the pros and cons for yourself.

It’s a heavy duty straight stitching machine that can sew up to 1500 stiches per minute. It’s a beautiful sleek looking machine. The arm is a wonderful 9 inches long. The base and arm are metal so the machine feels solid and is a little on the heavy side. I don’t plan to carry it to any classes so it’s not an issue for me. The machine top and side covers are plastic.

The controls are straight forward and easy. On the right you will find the stitch length dial, reverse lever and feed dog adjustment knob. There are 4 settings for the feed dogs which includes a pin feed setting.

In the photo below you can also see the button for automatic thread cutting. This is handy when quilting. You can cut the threads and re-position without having to take the entire quilt out of the machine.

The other button is the needle up/down setting. You can set the needle to stop in the down position each time you stop sewing. I can’t imagine having a machine without this feature on it.

You probably noticed that there isn’t a speed control button. I’ve had no problem controlling the speed of this machine. It’s very easy to stitch slowly or take just one stitch and stop. Which brings me to the reverse button. The machine changes between forward and reverse on a dime. It doesn’t take any extra stitches in between like my other machines.

The tension adjustment and foot pressure adjustment are on the left. There is a little window with a guide for the foot pressure adjustment. It has a coordinating chart to match feed dog settings and fabric types.

There is a separate switch for the light. I haven’t quite figured out what purpose that serves yet. Wouldn’t you always won’t the light on when the machine is on?

On the upper right you can see the 2 spool holders and the built in telescoping thread guide. You can use small spools or cones on this machine.

You can also see the bobbin winder in this photo. You do have to stop sewing in order to wind bobbins. There isn’t a separate motor. Bobbins are metal and a little pricey at .75 each.

Bobbin access is on the left side of the machine. There is a Quick Bobbin Thread Device above the bobbin. This cuts and sets the thread in just the right position to begin sewing. There is no need to bring the bobbin thread to the top of the machine. This makes things much faster and easier.

I will mention here that this machine doesn’t have a free arm. It’s not an issue for me but something you may need to consider.

The bobbin area is easy to access even with the extension table in place.

Below is a photo without a presser foot on the machine. It has a nice small needle hole on the plate since it only sews straight stitches. This keeps the fabric from being pulled down when your sewing. It’s fabulous for starting on the edge of fabrics when piecing.

The presser feet screw on and off. That’s a little bit of a hassle when doing a project where you have to change between several feet frequently. Of course, at high speeds you don’t want to accidentally have the foot fall off.

I personally think the needle threader is crap. The needle is positioned to thread left to right so you can easily use a hand held needle threader. I never use my automatic needle threaders anyway. I just thought I’d mention it for those that do.

With daily use it recommends that the machine be oiled twice a month. There are 6 easy to locate points for oiling.

The machine comes with 8 feet:
Flex foot – I hemmed corduroys with this and it was a dream to sew over the thick seam
Walking foot – a little chunkier than my old one so it took some getting used to
Free motion foot – Love it!
General foot
1/4 inch foot
Rolled hem foot
Zipper foot
Invisible zipper foot

The extension table, knee lift lever, seam guide and cover are also included with the machine. I haven’t tried the knee lift lever or seam guide yet. The seam guide screws on with the presser foot and guides from above the fabric. It’s adjustable left to right and front to back.

If you've read this far your probably wondering about the fine print. This machine is in the $900-1000 range. It includes a 25 year limited warranty, 10 years on parts and 5 years electrical. You can find more about the machine on the Baby Lock website HERE.

I found it to be similar to the Juki machines. I do like the fact that I have a Baby Lock dealer nearby in case the need for service or questions arises. I do not work for Baby Lock and do not get any financial gain from writing my opinions. I just thought it might be of use if anyone is looking for a new machine.

The New Food Pyramid

Totally Random

Do you have a high efficiency washer? Does the vibration drive you out of your mind? Some days it feels like my house is going to fall over. Every room shakes, photos go crooked, and items jump off of their shelves.

I tried the rubber feet that were supposed to absorb the vibrations. All they did was help the washer walk across the room. I never knew where I’d find it after a load of wash.

My wonderful husband finally found a solution. He put a 3/4 inch thick piece of plywood under the washer. All 4 feet sit on the same piece of board. Guess what? It’s so quiet and still I hardly know it’s there. It’s not the prettiest solution but it works. I’m amazed! Who knew?

Just thought I’d share. Maybe this will be of help to somebody out there.

Glad December is on It’s Way Out

Whew! December has been a busy, busy month. Between the holiday, baking, visitors and teaching sewing classes over school breaks I need a nap. hahaha.

I wanted to share a photo from my 2 day quilting class. This was a class of advanced students ages 10-16 years old.

They created the “I’m a Wiener” quilt from the Dare To Be Square book. I’m so proud of them!!! This was a BIG challenge in a short period of time.

They learned to piece with 1/4 seams, machine quilt using a walking foot, and attach bindings. This photo was taken with various stages of bindings being done.

They have already taken my beginner quilting class, which uses the quick turn and tie method to complete quilts. The beginner class also learns to piece using a 1/2 inch seam.

Next time your at the book store take a look at Dare To Be Square by Boo Davis. It’s full of fun quilts and patchwork projects. Most of the projects are great for using up stash scraps too. The book has a very thorough section on patchwork and quilting basics with plenty of large photos. There are instructions for 10 quilts, 2 baby quilts, book cover, vest, 2 pillows, table runner, place mats, pot holders, apron, stitched cards, tote, and a stuffie.

It’s hard to believe another year is almost over. I want to thank everyone that has read, commented, followed, stalked and otherwise dropped by my blog this year. It’s been a wonderful adventure and your support has kept me going.

This was supposed to be the year of de-stashing and finishing UFO’s. Well, my UFO buckets are finally empty. I can’t believe my eyes! This is the first time I will be starting a quilting year off with a clean slate…EVER!

Scrub Set Accessories

Scrub Booties

Supply List
1 yard of fabric for the entire scrub set

4 pieces of 1/4 inch wide elastic x 3 1/4 inches long

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern

Draw a 5 x 6 inch rectangle on paper and cut it out.

Fold it in half to make a 5 x 3 rectangle.

On the fold measure and make a dot 1/2 inch in from the side. Draw a line from that dot to the top corner.

Cut this triangle off.

Label the pattern “scrub bootie – cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabrics

Pin the pattern to your fabric and cut out 2 booties.

Step 3 – Sew the Casing
Fold the top and bottom edges 1/2 inch.

Sew along the edge to make the casing. Be careful to sew straight so your elastic will fit when done.

Step 4 – Insert Elastic
Use a pin on the end of your elastic to help guide it through the casing.

Sew across the ends of the casing to hold the elastic in place using your presser foot as a guide.

Step 5 – Sew Side Edges

Fold the bootie in half with “pretty” sides touching. Make the side edges even and pin.

Sew both sides using a 3/8 seam.

Turn pretty side out and gently poke the corners out.

Repeat all steps for second bootie.

Scrub Mask

Supply List
1 yard of fabric for the entire scrub set

2 pieces of wide double fold bias x 36 inches long

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern
Draw a 5 x 2 inch rectangle on paper and cut it out.

Label the pattern “scrub - mask cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric

Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out.

Step 3 – Sew the Mask Side Seams

Place both pieces together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the short edges even and pin.

Sew the short sides using a 3/8 inch seam.

Turn pretty side out and press neatly.

Step 4 – Sew the Straps

Note: one side of the tape is slightly wider than the other. The wider side will be sewn on first. This will be the back of the mask.

Unfold the bias tape and center along the top edge. Make the edges even and pin.

Sew along the fold line of the bias tape to attach it to the mask.

Refold the bias tape along the fold lines bringing it around the fabric edge to the other side (front) and pin.

Sew all the way down the bias tape to make it a strap. Repeat for the other side.

Step 5 – Make the Side Tucks

Fold the side edges of the mask into thirds and pin. This will make a tuck in the side edge.

Sew along the sides to hold the tuck in place. Repeat for the other side edge.

Fluff out the mask and your done.

Supply List
1 yard of fabric for the entire scrub set

13 inch long piece of 1/4 inch wide elastic

Fabric Marker

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern
Draw a 12 inch diameter circle on paper and cut it out.

Label the pattern “scrub hat – cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric

Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out 2.

Step 3 – Sew the Circles

Place both circles together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.

Use a fabric marker to mark a small opening on the edge for turning.

Sew around the circle using a 3/8 inch seam.

Step 4 – Clip Curves

Carefully clip the curves around the hat. Don’t cut your stitching.

Turn the circle pretty side out and press neatly.

Step 5 – Sew the Casing

Sew around the circle again 1/2 inch from the edge to make the casing. Keep your stitches straight so the elastic will fit when done.

Step 6 – Insert Elastic

Use a pin on the end of the elastic to help pull it through the casing.

Sew the edges of the elastic together.

Even out the gathers around the hat.

Pin and sew the opening shut.

One Way to Finish Fleece Blankets

My Angry Bird fleece blankets were made using one layer of fleece. I really didn’t want to just leave the edges unfinished but didn’t want to do the same ‘ol fringe that everyone does either. After much searching I stumbled on to Sulky Blendables. Have you seen these!

They’re a 12 wt. (also comes in 30 wt.) 100% Egyptian cotton thread that changes color randomly every2.5 - 5 inches. It comes in so many fabulous colors and has a wonderful sheen.

Finishing the Fleece Blankets

Step 1 – Use a CD to round the corners of the blanket. It’s the perfect radius for serging. I learned this trick from Cynsew.

Step 2 - My serger was set for a wide 3 thread overlock stitch (left needle only, widest stitch width, 3 for stitch length). My tensions are automatic so you may need to play with your machine a little. I also moved the differential feed up one notch.

Step 3 - The Sulky Blendables 12wt. were used in the upper and lower loopers. Regular Coats and Clark thread that matched the fleece blanket color was used in the left needle.

A very professional looking, neat edge to an otherwise simple single layer of fleece. This thread was a dream to serge with and the colors are fabulous.

Sew on the top and bottom borders. Press and square up the corners.

TADA! YOUR QUILT TOP IS FINISHED!!!

Quilting
You can quilt any way you like. My first one was tied and my second one was machine quilted with a pantograph (edge to edge). Both look great.

Scrub Top

Supply List
1 yard of fabric for the entire scrub set

Two pieces of Velcro

Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Fabric Marker
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern

Shirt Front Pattern

Draw an 8 tall x 8 ½ wide rectangle on a piece of paper and out it out.

Now draw a 4 x 4 inch square in the lower corner.Cut and remove this square

from your pattern to make the sleeve. Label this as the “shirt front pattern –

cut 1 on fold”.

Shirt Back Pattern

Draw an 8 tall x 9 wide rectangle on a piece of paper and cut it out.

Now draw a 4 x 4 inch square in the lower corner. Cut and remove this square

from your pattern to make the sleeve. Label this as the “shirt back pattern –

cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabrics
Fold your fabric in half and pin the left edge of the shirt front pattern along the fold of your fabric. Cut one piece.

Pin the shirt back pattern to the fabric and cut out two pieces.

Step 3 – Sew Shoulder Seam
Place one front piece and the back together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the shoulder edges even and pin.

Make a dot 5 1/2 inches from the end.

Sew the shoulder seam from the sleeve edge to the dot using a 1/2 inch seam.

Repeat these steps for the other front piece.

Step 4 – Sew the Neck Edge
Press seam open.

Carefully stitch along the neck edge between the dots to hold the fabric down. Do this for the front and back of the top.

Step 5 – Hem Sleeves
Fold the sleeve edges 1/2 inch towards the wrong side of the shirt.

Sew along the edge to make the hem using your presser foot as a guide. Press hem.

Step 6 – Sew Side Seams
Fold the shirt so the front and back pieces are “pretty” sides touching. Make the side seams even and pin.

Sew side seams using a 3/8 seam.

Carefully make a small clip in the corner of the under arm. Do not cut your stitching.

Step 7 – Hem the Back
Fold the back edges 1/2 inch towards the wrong side of the shirt.

Sew along this edge to make a hem using your presser foot as a guide. Press hem.

Step 8 – Hem the Bottom Edge
Fold the bottom of the shirt 1/2 inch to the wrong side.

Sew along the edge to make a hem using your presser foot as a guide. Press hem.

Step 9 – Add Velcro Closures
Place one piece of Velcro at the top corner of the shirt the back and stitch in place.

Fold the shirt closed and mark the placement for the other half of the Velcro on the under side. Stitch it in place on the under side of the shirt. Check to make sure the pieces match when the shirt is closed.

Add the second Velcro closure to the middle of the shirt following the same steps.

Scrub Pants

Supplies
Fabric from above
11 inches of 1/4 wide elastic
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Fabric Marker
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern
On an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper measure and draw a vertical line 4 1/2 inches from the long side edge. Draw a second line 6 inches from the long side edge.

Now measure and draw a horizontal line 4 1/2 inches from the top of the paper.

Using this grid draw a curved edge at the top like the photo. Connect to the bottom with a straight edge.

Cut out the pattern and label it “scrub pants – cut 2 on fold”.

Step 2 – Cut Fabrics
Fold the fabric in half. Pin the pattern to the fold. Cut out. Do this twice.

Step 3 – Sew the Hem
Fold the bottom edge up 1/2 inch towards the wrong side of the fabric.

Sew along the edge using your presser foot as a guide to make the hem. Press the hem.

Do this for both pant legs.

Step 4 – Sew the Center Seam
Place both pieces “pretty” sides touching. Make the curved edge even and pin.

Sew both curved edges using a 3/8 inch seam.

Step 5 – Sew the Inner Leg
Refold the pants bringing the center seams(the curved edges you just stitched) together. You will see it form the legs.

Make the leg edges even and pin.

Sew using a 3/8 inch seam.

Step 6 – Sew the Casing
Fold the top of the pants down 5/8 inch towards the wrong side of the fabric and pin.

Mark an opening for the elastic to go into.

Sew along the edge to make the casing. Do not sew the opening shut. Remember your elastic has to fit through the casing se keep your stitches neat.

Step 7 – Insert the Elastic
Use a safety pin on the end of the elastic to help pull it through the casing.

Sew the ends of the elastic together.

Pin and sew the opening shut.

Kitchen Set

This is one of the all time favorites in my sewing classes.

Apron

Supply List
1/4 yard or Fat quarter of 2 different fabrics
Four 12 inch long pieces of 1/2 inch wide ribbon
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Fabric Marker or chalk wheel
Fray Check (optional)
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern
Draw an 8 1/2 inch square on paper and cut it out.

Fold the square in half and mark a dot 2 inches in and 3 inches down on the open edge.

Draw a curve for the arm between these dots.

Cut off the corner along the curved line.

Label the pattern “apron – cut 2”.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabrics
Stack the fabrics and pin the pattern on top. Cut out the fabric.

Step 3 – Attach the Neck Straps and Ties
On one fabric piece, measure 1/2 inch in on the top edge and mark a dot.

Measure 1/2 down on both sides and mark a dot.

Pin the ribbons next to each mark. NOTE: Ribbons will point in to the apron like the photo.

Stitch across each ribbon to hold them in place.

Step 4 – Sew the Apron
Gather the ribbons together and pull to the side.

Place the second fabric on top with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.

Mark an opening on the side edge. Make sure the gathered ribbons come out between these marks.

Sew around the apron using a 3/8 seam. Do not sew between the marks for your opening.

Step 5 – Clip Curves and Corners
Carefully clip a small triangle of each corner. Do not cut your stitching.

Step 6 – Finishing
Turn pretty side out.

Gently use a point turner to make nice corners and press.

Top stitch around close to the edge. This will sew the opening shut and keep the apron nice and flat.

Add a small drop of fray check to the ends of the ribbons (optional).

Cooking Hat

Supply List
1/3 yard white fabric
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw the pattern on
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Draw the Pattern
Draw a 7 x 4 inch rectangle and cut it out. Label this “hat band – cut 1 on fold”

Draw a 12 inch circle and cut it out. Label it “hat – cut 1”

Step 2 – Cut Fabric
Pin the patterns to the fabric and cut out.

Step 3 – Sew the Hat Band
Fold the hat band in half making a 7 x 4 rectangle. Make the short edges even and sew using a 3/8 seam.

Refold the hat band with “wrong” sides touching. This will make a donut shape circle. Make the edges even and pin.

Press the folded edge and set this aside.

Step 4 – Gather the Hat Top
Set your machine for a long basting stitch. Sew around the hat top. Do not lock your stitches for this step.

Pull one thread tail to gather up the stitches.

Pin the gathered edge of the hat top to the hat band along the open edge (not the folded edge). Even out the gathers, make the edges even and pin as you go.

Step 5 – Sew the Hat Band On
Set your machine back on a regular stitch and sew around the hat band using a 3/8 seam. It is easier if the gathers are down next to the feed dogs.

Step 6 – Finishing
Finish this edge using a zigzag stich to keep it from fraying.

Turn hat pretty side out and remove any basting threads that show on the outside of the hat.

Oven Mitt

Supplies
Scraps of thin cotton batting
Scraps of matching fabric
Printed PDF sewing template HERE
Sewing supplies

Step 1 – Print the Pattern
Print the oven mitt PDF sewing template HERE.

Step 2 – Sew the Top Edge
Place both batting pieces on the table. Then place the mitt fabric pieces on top of the batting with "pretty” sides facing down. Make the bottom edges even and pin.

Sew along the bottom edges using a 3/8 seam.

Flip the pretty side out and press.

Top stitch along the edge to hold the fold in place.

Step 3 – Sew the Oven Mitt

Place both mitt pieces “pretty” sides touching. Make the bottom sewn edges even.

Rough cut around 1 sewing template to remove it from the page. Do not cut on the lines. This is a sewing template not a pattern.

Pin the oven mitt stitching template on to the stack making bottom edge of the template even to the bottom sewn edge of the fabric.

Sew slowly along the lines of the template.

Step 4 – Trim
Carefully tear away the paper.

Carefully trim around the mitt leaving a small seam allowance.

Turn mitt pretty side out. Carefully use your point turner to poke the thumb out.

I’m Stripping for Cancer

Strip piecing some stash scraps that is!

Regina of 4Patches4Hope has created a wonderful campaign in memory of her mother who recently lost her battle with cancer. Her goal is to collect 1000 four patch blocks by February 2012. All the patches will be sewn into comfort quilts and donated to people undergoing cancer treatment. She is also trying to raise $4000 for the American Cancer Society.

A Lesson Learned

If you’re having great difficulty picking fabric for your quilt you’re probably not picking from the right fabrics! hahahaha.

Switching plans and adding the gold to the border makes this quilt so warm and inviting. I love it.

Another UFO takes flight! I have one last UFO in the bucket. Whoop!

A New Plan

The original fabrics from this UFO are several years old and it’s been difficult to match the reds and greens. This has been the most challenging problem about finishing UFO’s. So, after visiting several quilt shops today I have a new plan. I’m adding a thin gold border, a wide green border, and binding it in red. The gold is a nice surprise to the eye and may just work. What do you think?

Now I’m stuck looking at border fabrics. Why is it so difficult some days?

I leaning towards the bottom red for a narrow border. I think I want a wide green border but that green isn’t moving me. Humph!

Tuesday Tutorial #8

Doll Bikini

Towel can be found with the summer vacation set

Bikini Top

Supply List for Top and Bottoms
1/4 yard fabric
Package of double fold bias tape (wide if you’re an inexperienced sewer, narrow otherwise)
Sewing Supplies

Step 1 – Print the Pattern
Print the PDF pattern HERE

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric
Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric and cut them out.

Step 3 – Cut Bias Tape
2 pieces of bias tape 15 inches long
1 piece of bias tape 24 inches long

Step 4 – Sew the Top Edge
Place two bathing suit top pieces together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.

Sew the top edge using a 3/8 seam.

Turn the fabric pretty side out and press the sewn edge neatly.

Step 5 – Sew the Side Straps
Use the two small bias strips for the side straps.

Unfold the bias tape and place along the back side edge making it even with the fabric. Sew along the fold line of the tape.

Refold the tape along the fold lines and wrap it around the edge of the fabric to the front and pin.

Sew all the way down the tape to make a strap.

Step 6 – Sew the Bottom Strap
Use the long tape for the bottom strap.

Place the bikini top on the table with the wrong side facing up. Unfold the tape and center along the bottom edge of the bikini top.

Sew along the fold line of the tape.Refold the tape along the fold lines and wrap it around the edge of the fabric to the front and pin.

Sew all the way down the tape to make a strap.

Step 7 – Finishing
Make little knots at the ends of your ties (optional)

Bikini Bottoms

Supplies

Step 1 – Print the Pattern
Print the PDF pattern HERE (same as above printout)

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric
Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric and cut them out.

Step 3 – Cut Bias Tape
2 piece of bias tape 24 inches long

Step 4 – Sew the Side Edges
Place two bikini front pieces together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.

Sew the side edges using a 3/8 seam.

Repeat these steps for the bikini back pieces.

Turn fabric pretty side out and press.

Step 5 – Sew the Front and Back Together
Place the front and back pieces together with “pretty” sides touching. Make the bottom edge even and pin.

Sew with a 3/8 seam.

Step 6 – Sew the Straps
Place the bikini on the table with the wrong side facing up. Unfold the tape and center it along the top edge.

Sew along the fold line of the tape.Refold the tape along the fold lines and wrap it around the edge of the fabric to the front and pin.

Sew all the way down the tape to make a strap.

Repeat for the other strap.

Step 7 – Finishing
Make little knots at the ends of your ties (optional).

I finished reading my book last night. It was excellent in case anyone is interested in that information.

Today I’m working on some peppermint candy blocks. I have 5 more to go. These are just so cute.

It’s another project from my UFO bucket. I can see the bottom of the bucket now. There are 3 items left in there. The rest of the quilts are UFO wish list items not items that I’ve cut and stashed. Woohoo!
